About Mariager Handest Veteranjernbane
Take a seat in the nearly 100-year-old vintage train and travel back in time to when your grandmother or great-grandfather were young, when Denmark's king was Chr. X, and the country was led by Th. Stauning.
As soon as you have purchased your ticket, the journey has begun. A "round trip Mariager-Handest" is a ticket in brown cardboard, just like the one the station master sold at the ticket booth a hundred years ago.
The conductor blows the whistle, and the journey begins. 17 kilometers through some of the most beautiful parts of Denmark: fjords, charming towns, beech forests, rolling hills, heathlands, and valleys. The speed is 30 kilometers per hour, so you'll have time to take it all in.
The trip with the old vintage train back and forth between Mariager and Handest takes 45 minutes each way, and there is plenty to see along the way.
You can also stand on one of the open end platforms of the passenger cars and enjoy the scenery while listening to the old locomotive working its way through the scenic landscape south of Mariager Fjord, with the whistle blowing frequently. All vintage trains are in 2022 operated with the railway’s historic motor equipment.

The family is, of course, very welcome to bring a picnic basket and afternoon coffee on the vintage train and enjoy refreshments along the way. It just makes the journey even cozier.

You can also enjoy your packed food at the preserved Handest Station, where there are tables and benches. Coffee, cake, ice cream, and soft drinks are available at the Railway Kiosk at the station. In the meantime, the children can take a ride with the postbox-red railbus on the model railway in the station’s warehouse. You can also have a look inside the waiting room and station office, which remains "almost untouched", just as it was when the private railway opened almost a hundred years ago.
